Prep report 05/17/18: NCHS baseball topples BHSMay 17, 2018 5:31pm

May 17--The Normal Community High School baseball team snapped a 3-3 tie with four fifth-inning runs en route to an 8-3 Big 12 Conference victory over Bloomington on Wednesday at Bloomington.

Tyler Thierry and Griffin McCluskey each drove in two runs for the Ironmen (22-6, 10-3), while Alex Zogg had two of NCHS' seven hits.

McCluskey (4-0) allowed one earned run and struck out nine in five innings for the pitching victory.

Nick Sharp drove in two runs for the Purple Raiders (17-15, 5-7) and Liam McGill contributed three hits.

Schwab leads Eureka: Aaron Schwab was the winning pitcher and also had two hits and two RBIs in Eureka's 14-0, five-inning win over Fieldcrest in a Class 2A Eureka Regional semifinal at Eureka. Schwab struck out seven in 3 1/3 innings.

Tri-Valley advances: Tri-Valley scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to slip past GCMS, 4-2, in a semifinal game of the Class 2A PBL Regional at Downs.

Winning pitcher Drew Rudsinski struck out nine and allowed one earned run in 6 2/3 innings. Matt Mier nailed down the final out for a save.

Schultz leads Heyworth: Matt Schultz belted three home runs and drove in six to lead Heyworth to an 18-8 win over Ridgeview in the semifinals of the Class 1A Blue Ridge regional at Farmer City.

Winning pitcher Peyton Mayfield added a pair of doubles and three RBIs for the Hornets.

LeRoy rolls: Nick Perry and Will Dooley drove in two runs each to pace LeRoy to an 11-3 victory over Peoria Heights in a semifinal game of the Class 1A Peoria Heights Regional.

Dooley was the winning pitcher for LeRoy (21-9). Nate Sammer struck out seven in three scoreless innings of relief.


GCMS edges Eureka: Madison Eberle prevailed in a pitcher's duel in GCMS' 1-0 win over Eureka in a Class 2A regional semifinal at El Paso. Makenzi Bielfeldt had three hits and drove home the game's only run in the fourth inning in support of Eberle's four-hit, 10-strikeout pitching performance.

Payne powers Lexington: Raelyn Payne's four hits included two doubles and she scored four runs in Lexington's 13-3 win over Tri-Valley in a Class 2A Central Catholic Regional semifinal at Bloomington's McGraw Park.

Jayden Standish added three hits, including a home run, for Lexington.

Slayback, Spencer lead Heyworth: Adyson Slayback pitched a one-hitter and struck out 16 as Heyworth nipped Cerro Gordo, 1-0, in a Class 1A regional semifinal at Fisher.

Morgan Spencer accounted for the game's only run with a second inning home run.

WFC cruises: Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell received four RBIs each from Audrey Jenkins and Shea Moritz in a 16-1 trouncing of Momence in the semifinals of the Herscher 2A Regional.

Moritz pitched a four-inning complete game and struck out three.

Prairie Central prevails: Lindsey Hari hit a home run and joined teammate Brianna Seeman with three RBIs in Prairie Central's 11-5 win over Watseka in a semifinal of the 2A Prairie Central Regional at Fairbury.

Winning pitcher Faith Bachtold had two hits at the plate.


Dawson leads area state qualifiers: Pontiac's Cam Dawson won the high jump competition while qualifying for the state meet in three different events at Wednesday's Class 2A Boys Sectional Meet at LaSalle.

In addition to capturing the high jump by clearing 6-foot-3, Dawson also finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump to advance.

Pontiac finished fifth in the meet with 50 points, a spot behind Prairie Central (65).

The Hawks will be sending four qualifiers to the state meet. Chandler Ifft cleared the bar at 15-0 to capture the pole vault while Zach Matson won the shot put with a toss of 51-00.50.

Aidan Krieger advanced in two events, finishing second in the 110 hurdles and meeting the state qualifying mark with a third in the 300 hurdles. Prairie Central's Wyatt Steidinger finished second in the high jump to move on.

Streator will be sending three to state, led by Tre Rathbun who won the long jump at 22-05. The Bulldogs

Kobie Webb finished fourth behind Rathbun in the event, but was able to meet the state qualifying mark. Adrian Jones finished second in the 800 to advance.

Streator finished sixth with 44 points. Geneseo (86) was the overall winner.
